Hayley E Martin is a North Carolina based artist that has always been enchanted by storytelling. After receiving her BFA from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, her work went on to earn Best in Show and Juror's Choice awards for its emphasis on psychology and the finality of human choices. Her Christian faith plays a large role in the subjects of her paintings as she attempts to capture the imperfection in portraitures as beautiful—each stroke purposeful and unique. To mimic this unattainable and divine design, Hayley chooses to use mediums that are more unforgiving and difficult to manipulate into a “perfect” image, like charcoals and oil/soft pastels.

artist statement

If the face is the canvas then our choices are the mediums. Deep thinkers have engraved valleys between their eyes. Nutrient deficiencies disrupt hair growth. Lack of attention produces accidental cuts, bruises, or burns. Our body expels the minute and often unforeseen choices we make daily while plastering them on the canvas of our face like topography. She is fascinated by the walking gallery we all take part in without intention day after day.
